Gifted and Talented Education (GATE)
Welcome to IIA’s GATE Program!
At Irvine International Academy, our Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program is designed to support the academic, social, and emotional development of advanced learners. Gifted students often demonstrate exceptional aptitude or achievement in one or more areas and may exhibit unique learning characteristics such as advanced reasoning, creativity, strong memory, curiosity, leadership, or deep interest in specific topics. Giftedness can present in many ways, and not all gifted learners perform at the highest academic levels in every subject area.
At IIA, we believe gifted learners deserve both challenge and support. Our GATE program is grounded in current research and best practices in gifted education and is designed to provide meaningful learning opportunities that nurture students’ strengths while supporting their overall growth as learners and individuals.
Our formal GATE services primarily support identified students primarily in grades 4 and above.

GATE Identification Process
IIA uses a universal screening process to help identify students who may qualify for GATE services. Each Spring, IIA offers an assessment to all third-grade students to assess verbal, non-verbal, figural, and quantitative reasoning questions. These assessments are designed to assess a child's performance across a wide variety of reasoning skill sets. All third-grade students are included in the assessment unless a parent or guardian chooses to opt-out. Assessments are rotated each year, but may include the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) or the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT).
If parents or guardians of students in grades 4-8 have not been tested the previous year and wish to participate in the assessment, they can reach out to our GATE Coordinator Ms. Zhang at [email protected]. Additionally, if a student enrolls at IIA with a previous GATE program listed in their records, they will not need to be assessed again.
GATE Services and Learning Opportunities
In addition to classroom differentiation, identified GATE students may receive expanded opportunities designed to support advanced learning. Examples may include:
- depth and complexity-based instruction
- inquiry-based and project-based learning opportunities
- advanced problem-solving and critical thinking tasks
- enrichment opportunities
- independent or collaborative research projects
- leadership opportunities
- mentorship or special events (as available)
Because IIA is a dual immersion school, advanced learners may also engage in opportunities that integrate multilingual thinking, creativity, and cross-cultural problem solving.
